Kidney stones: How can something so small hurt so much?
The pain usually comes in waves, stabbing and knife-like. No body position –

childbirth. What can cause this agony? Would you believe that an object the size
of a grain of sand can do this?

For those who have not experienced a kidney stone, this may sound unbelievable. On the other hand, many who have had kidney stones understand the pain all too well. I often wonder how those without modern medical care must suffer from kidney stones. Fortunately, we live in an age when many stones can be prevented and those that do form can be treated without major surgery.
What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones usually first appear in men and women ages 20 to 40. Men are three times more likely to have stones than women. However, urine calcium levels rise during pregnancy, making stone formation easier. While “bad genes” are usually not the cause for most people, certain familial kidney diseases do lead to stones. Chronic urinary tract infections can also lead to development of kidney stones.
The single largest cause of kidney stones is dehydration. Stones tend to occur more often in warmer climates. Other causes of kidney stones include sedentary lifestyle, dietary instability and certain medications.
How do I prevent kidney stones?
As mentioned above, dehydration causes most kidney stones. It is especially easy to become dehydrated while living right here in the beautiful, yet dry, Southern Utah desert. Increasing oral fluid intake is highly recommended. A good goal (unless your doctor has told you to limit fluids for heart or kidney reasons) is to drink enough fluid to make at least 2. 5 liters of urine per day. For the average person, that means six to nine trips to the bathroom per day! It may sound like a hassle, but doing this reduces kidney stone recurrence by 50 percent.
A recent study confirms that water is best. Cola drinks were found to cause stones, both those with sugar or artificial sweeteners. If you don’t like drinking water, then the next best option is to flavor your water with lemon.
You may have heard that if you have kidney stones, you need to avoid food containing dairy. This is not true. Although most kidney stones contain calcium, simply reducing or eliminating calcium from your diet is not recommended. In fact, people who form calcium stones who drastically reduce dietary calcium actually form more stones in the future.

People who form frequent kidney stones should have more extensive evaluation by a doctor. This may include blood and urine testing to determine the cause. Occasionally, we find parathyroid tumors or other seemingly unrelated but important causes for recurrent kidney stones. How can I tell if I have a kidney stone?

Kidney stones usually become painful when they enter the ureter (the small tube that connects a kidney to the bladder. ) When the stone is higher in the ureter, pain usually occurs in the flank on the side of the stone. Nausea and vomiting may occur as well. If the urine trapped behind the stone becomes infected, then fever and shaking chills could occur.
If stones are small enough, they can progress down the ureter toward the bladder. As they do this, the pain can migrate to the front of the abdomen and pelvis on the side of the stone. Pain may radiate down to the genital area too.
What can be done for my kidney stone?
If kidney stones pass to the bladder, then usually the hard part is over. Typically, they can pass from the bladder very easily. If stones are stuck in the kidney or ureter, then a urologist may need to help. Certain medication can loosen the muscular wall of the ureter, increasing the likelihood of passing stones.
Surgical options are usually minimally invasive. Depending on the size and location of the stone, it can be broken up with shock waves, lasers or simply removed with a basket (all done without an incision. ) Larger stones may need more invasive procedures where the stone may need to be removed through an incision.
Prevent if you can, treat if you must

Growing flowering bulbs in the landscape

I tell myself that one day I am going to take up a few new hobbies. I always would like to get into bird watching and believe I could enjoy gardening more with more free time. I really enjoy bulb plants.
There are a wide variety of bulbs that will work in Georgia. With flowering bulbs, you can get a variety of flower colors and even get some variety in the foliage. You also can use bulbs from group plantings to growing in pots if space is limited.
Today, I will be share researched based information from UGA Horticulturists, Paul Thomas, Gary Wade and Bodie Pennisi.
For the sake of time, I won’t go into great detail, but you need to have a basic terminology of bulbs and the other bulb-like structures that are associated with bulbs.
A bulb is an underground organ that will have a short, fleshy and mainly vertical stem axis bearing at the top a growing point or flower bud.
Within bulbs there are two types, the tunicate and the non-tunicate or scaly type bulb. A daffodil would be an example of a tunicate and a lily would be a non-tunicate type bulb.
A corm is the swollen base of a stem axis enclosed by scale-like leaves.
Crocus and gladiolus would be an example of a corm.
A tuber is a modified stem-like structure that develops on underground stems. For example sake, an Irish potato and caladiums would be tubers.
Finally, a rhizome is a specialized stem structure where the main stem of the plant grows horizontally below the soil surface or at the soil surface.
Iris and cannas would be rhizome examples.
If you want to get into or expand you bulb gardening, note that bulbs are sorted by several categorizing factors.
You can research bulbs based on size, time of bloom and their overall hardiness.
When thinking about hardiness, remember that tender bulbs do not handle freezing temperatures and mainly are planted in warmer areas.

Also for example, summer flowering bulbswill include hardy to tender bulbs that flower in the summer. In addition, some of the summer bulbs can even flower up to frost in some situations.
When deciding on bulbs, make sure you are planting the right bulbs at the correct of year and again that they will work in your part of the state.
Site selection for all landscape items is important. If you plant your tree, shrub and even bulbs in the wrong site, the landscape item may survive, but never reach maximum potential. Most spring flowering bulbs can manage in a light shade to a full sun setting.
You need to find a site that can offer 6-10 hours of direct light per day. According to Thomas, Wade and Pennisi, this need not restrict their planting to areas that are in full sun year around because many spring flowering bulbs bloom and produce foliage well before most deciduous trees leaf out.
The summer bulbs on the other hand need to be in a spot where the will receive more exact on the recommended amount of light. On the summer flowering bulbs, poor or less than the recommended lights hours can result in poor flowering.
Note also that too much or more than the recommended light hours can result in bleaching of flowering and foliage in some of the bulbs. This means that selecting the right bulbs for the right area including the sun light hours is a factor.

This is an iconic place, associated with the works of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven artists, who shaped a certain image of harsh, beautiful Canadian wilderness, with its rocky islands, twisted pine trees and windswept skies. The area became a favourite vacation spot for the country’s elite, with multimillion-dollar cottages and spectacular views.

In Honey Harbour, a tiny community on the fractal-like southeastern shores of Georgian Bay, 21-year-old Lauren Patchett has worked at the Bee Hive Gifts & Antiques shop every summer since she was 14. She remembers how the water levels began to drop dramatically over the past decade. One year, she recalls, “we came up and it was starkly different. We had a whole new beach. ”
At her family cottage in nearby Waubaushene, her grandfather Richard McPhail would hold her on his lap when she was a toddler as he sat on a submerged rock, the water reaching his knees. Today, the water has pulled away and that same rock sits bare, surrounded by rotting weeds that have to raked away to remove their rank smell.
The situation has been a headache for many cottage owners, who lost access to their waterfront, had to relocate their docks, and lost property value, says long-time resident Larry Simons. “Maybe the Great Lakes aren’t an endless water supply, ” he says.
A five-minute drive to the south, at the Picnic Island Resort, a cottage and trailer-camping facility with a marine gas station and boat slip, owner Ken Aquino has seen a 35-per-cent drop in boat fuel sales.
“There's a lot less boat traffic. I think people are afraid because they don’t know where the rocks are now. As the water drops, new rocks appear. ”
He recalls the days when a few boats would sail nearly every minute across the channel between his resort and Roberts Island. “It’s pretty quiet now. It used to look like the 401. Now, it’s empty. ”
The International Joint Commission, which is responsible for shared U. S. and Canadian water issues, says the decline can be blamed on many factors. In a 2009 study, it found that between 1963 and 2007, the water levels of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron dropped 23 centimetres relative to Lake Erie, though the shift varies depending on locations and seasons.
One cause for the change was what was done to the St. Clair River, which flows out of Lake Huron and has been dredged several times over the past century to open it for larger commercial vessels, increasing the flow of water out of Huron and Michigan. This lowered the overall water level in Michigan and Huron by an estimated seven to 14 centimetres, according to the commission.
Another factor was the glacial isostatic adjustment. With the disappearance of the weight of the glaciers that carved out the Great Lakes thousands of years ago, the Earth’s crust has slowly rebounded and tilted the area, resulting in another drop of four or five centimetres.
But the primary cause has been changing climate patterns, the study said. Shorter winters and warmer summers meant more water evaporating from the lakes than was going back in through precipitation, taking nine to 17 centimetres out of the water levels.
Earlier this year, the IJC surprised people in the area by recommending that Canada and the United States consider building a new structure in the St. Clair River to raise water levels in Lake Huron and Michigan by as much as 25 centimetres. One of the many options: an inflatable “flap gate” that would cost up to $170-million and would slow the movement of water through part of the river. But even if governments decided to go ahead with an engineered structure, it would take at least 10 years for water levels to rise.
Back in Honey Harbour, Diane Ross-Langley, who has run the Village Marina with her husband for more than four decades, said the receding shore forced them to spend more than $20, 000 this spring to fix the docking area and dredge around it.
Still, the shallower water has made life hard for boat owners. She says one first-time visitor damaged his boat’s outdrive, came to her marina for repairs, then headed out and quickly struck another emerging hazard despite staying within the navigation markers.
There are now fewer vacationers and they show up later in the summer, she says. “Nobody came up until July 1.... It was almost like a ghost town in this article. ”
Her husband, Larry Langley, quips that they should turn their business into a dealership for all-terrain vehicles. “Soon, it’ll just be a bunch of little ponds out there. ”
Despite a rainy summer, there is still much hand-wringing around Georgian Bay as locals and cottagers alike are again worrying about the future after water levels in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, which have remained below average for the past 14 years, hit a record low in January.
